what is the best way to archive over 30 hours of mini dv (digital video) footage?
i work off an apple power book core 2 duo
Archival of home video footage should be done to DVD. Archiving to an external hard drive (or any hard drive for that matter) is risky. It’s fine for the initial editing but to keep the footage, put it on something tangible. External drives stop working. If they decide to go, you will not be able to access anything that was on them. I have learned this the hard way but fortunately I was only using them for storage and not for archiving.
Mini DVD is a good start for having the initial footage on, but these tapes in the consumer hand can be dangerous as they are very delicate and easily damaged. Using them for archiving is not generally recommended either, but as a source tape they are great.
For archival purposes go for the gold plated DVD’s. They have a longer lifespan and are much more damage resistant than the normal DVD’s. If you have the ability to adjust the bitrate while burning to these discs, than the lower the bitrate the better. 1 hour or less of footage per disc is recommended for archiving. Don’t ram on 6 hours worth as the quality will go down. Also, always make a second copy. DVD’s, no matter how careful you are with them, even archival quality discs, can be damaged. A second copy at a separate location is peace of mind.
